Gwidon Borucki was an actor and singer who performed with Henryk Vars’ ensemble during WWII. Actor, singer and musician Gwidon Borucki (also known by his stage alias, Guido Lorraine) died in Melbourne, Australia, on 31 December 2009. He was born in Krakow, Poland, in 1912. Borucki was a famous performer at various cabarets in Warsaw in the 1930s, especially the Cyrulik Warszawski and Teatr Miniatura. From the beginning of World War II he has been associated with the Tea-Jazz ensemble of Henryk Wars (Henry Vars) in Lwow, and with this group he eventually made it out of the Soviet Union into Persia in 1942. Renamed “Polish Parade,” Wars’ orchestra became a prize-winning Allied Army ensemble and Mr Borucki one of its star performers. After the historic battle of Monte Cassino in Italy, Borucki was the first to sing the specially composed song, Red Poppies of Monte Cassino, which became an instant hit and to this day is one of the most popular Polish war-time songs.
