Notes
Born Sydney, NSW. Son of William SHERMAN & Amelia née HARRIS. Brother 206 PTE Godfrey John Sherman 9 Bn, KIA 25 April 1915. "France 8/10/17 My Dear Sherman, It is with the very greatest regret that I have to tell you hour Son, No 5106 Private Leslie Sherman was killed in action on the night of 3rd [sic] October. He was doing stretcher bearer work from the front line back to the dressing station with a man names Brown and had been doing splendid work all through, he had only got back about an hour before from a case and we were being relieved when a shell fell into the trench on top of both and they were killed instantly. They were only ten yards from me at the time, but nothing could be done for them they were both dead. We buried their bodies together in the same grave alongside two of their mates about 500 yards west of Zonnebeke Church which is near the railway about 5 miles east of Ypres, and just near the place where they were killed. You can rest assured that in action your Son bore himself as a soldier and never faultered in his duty, it is men such as he who has made the name of the Australians respected throughout the world as fighters. Allow me to offer you my deepest sympathy in your sad loss. Yours sincerely, Harold F White. Major."
