Born Sydney, NSW. Father, John Israel, 77 Page Street, Albert Park, Victoria. Brother 2389 SGT Norman Joseph Israel returned. Husband of Rhoda Israel. Distinguished Conduct Medal: Conspicuous gallantry in action on 29 September 1917 near Ypres, and excellent work in leading carrying parties through heavy fire. Recommendation date: 22 September 1917. 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. He rushed forward and bayonetted two of the enemy attack. He rushed forward and bayonetted two of the enemy who were inflicting casualties on another unit with a machine gun. He then helped to rush a concrete blockhouse, where eight prisoners were captured. After the consolidation he did splendid work in leading carrying parties to the front line through heavy barrages. He showed the greatest courage and determination.'
