Notes
Born 25/5/1890 London. Citation for Military Cross: For gallantry and devotion to duty on 8 June 1917. During the attack on Messines, Captain Joseph personally arranged, supervised and carried out the communications of 13th Australian Infantry Brigade and attacking Battalions that during the whole time they ere not out of communication. To secure this, Captain Joseph had to proceed several times through the heavy enemy barrage, which was falling in rear of Battalion Command Posts. Between 30 June and 20 July 1917, during the Division’s tour of duty in the Line, Captain Joseph’s excellent work was continued. He surveyed and supervised the construction of Buried Cable Routes in front of Ploegsteert and Nieppe. This work was carried out by night under very difficult conditions and enemy shellfire. During the period 26 February 1917 to 20 September 1917, Captain Joseph’s work has been of the highest order. He has been previously “Mentioned in Dispatches”. EG Sinclair MacLaglan – Major-General Commanding 4th Australian Division.
