Born 15/12/1894 Casterton, Victoria. Military Medal: 'For conspicuous gallantry in charge of platoon near Bapaume when he led an attack under heavy fire with considerable success.' Recommendation date: 25 March 1917. 'Near BAPAUME on the night 15/16th March, took command of the platoon when his officer was wounded, and led them with courage and judgment against an enemy strong post. The platoon was under heavy fire from three points but the Sergeant managed to get his officer and some wounded men back, and continued the attack. He displayed throughout remarkable coolness and fine qualities of leadership.' Source: 'Commonwealth Gazette' No 140. Date: 27 August 1917
