Notes
His name is on the Historic Obelisk in Melbourne General Cemetery, however he was not Jewish. David attested that he was Church of England. Father: Sam Lee, 10 Finley Street, Mile End Road, London, England and mother Mrs Sadie Lee, 13 Suffolk House, Rushcroft Road, Brixton SW3. David Lee was a cabinet maker and enlisted in Colac, Victoria and there is no evidence that he was known in the Victorian Jewish Community. There was no minyan or notices in Jewish publications in Victoria. He had a Testament in his effects. Colac Historical Society was contacted and their reply: "Hi Judy, Our evidence is that he worshipped at St Andrews Presbyterian Church in Colac and is on the church honour roll. Some of our members have done some extensive research into the local soldiers who died in WWI and have found no evidence of David Lee being a Jew. Sorry we can’t be of any more help. Kind regards, Merrill O’Donnell, Media/Treasurer, Colac & District Family History Group Inc". Rabbi’s decision: Ruled to not be Jewish. Therefore not to be on the list for future memorials.
