Notes
Born 10/10/1883 Dunedin, New Zealand. Son of Benjamin Henry SOLOMON & Rebecca née SHAPPERE, "Moss Pennoch," Clarendon Street, East Melbourne. Hubert Solomon described himself as an 'Agent' on the Embarkation Roll. He had enlisted with the 12th Reinforcements, Canterbury Infantry, from Wellington, New Zealand and left for Suez, on 1 May 1916. Hubert Solomon was killed in action in October 1917. He died while attacking a Zeppelin in the raid on London. Hubert Solomon, after being mentioned as a member of the Royal Flying Corps in France, was promoted to Lieutenant in October 1916 and transferred to England. He had special qualifications as a night flier. More specific detail relating to his death is present in his NZ Army file where there is a letter from the NZ High Commissioner in London to the NZ Prime Minister describing the circumstances in which LT Solomon was killed. The cable reads, "Philip Solomon killed aero accident Gainsborough 20th October. Machine caught fire after crashing during air raid action." A notice in The Hebrew Standard (Sydney, NSW) of 2 November, 1917 reads: Mrs Rebecca Solomon, of 36 Clarendon Street, East Melbourne, announces that her son, LT Hubert Phillip Solomon, of the Royal Flying Corps, has been killed in England. The deceased is the brother of Miss Vera Solomon and Messrs Jack and Cyril Solomon. Mrs Phil Finkelstein of Hotham Street, East Melbourne, is another. The late LT Solomon was described as being well known in commercial circles in Wellington NZ. He left New Zealand with one of the early reinforcements, landing in Egypt. Later he was transferred to England and attached to the Imperial Flying Corps, being ultimately, after having seen service in France, stationed near London. Mr JV Solomon, of Kelburn, was a brother, while Mr I Salek, of The Terrace, was an uncle. He was the son of Mr BH Solomon of Dunedin. Trove: The Hebrew Standard (Sydney NSW) 2/11/1917 p. 11. Hubert Phillip Solomon attested that he was Jewish and evidence supports this - but his grave wrongly marked with cross. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission has been contacted about this error. Their reply 11/3/2017, “Dear Dr. Landau, Thank you for your email. This issue has already been brought to our attention and we already have plans in place to replace the headstone. All being well, this should be achieved within the next 12 months. We will arrange to forward you a photo of the new stone once it has been erected. Yours sincerely, Roy Hemington.
