Born 24/3/1921 St Kilda, Victoria. Son of Joseph FRIEZE & Annie née BARKMAN (Chana Bat Shmuel), 17 Tennyson Street, St Kilda, Victoria. Aircraft - Lockheed Hudson A16-118 took off from RAAF Station Archerfield on the afternoon of 5 March 1945. Due to a cyclone that was ravaging the Queensland coast at the time, the aircraft crashed into the sea about 400 metres (440 yd) out from Machans Beach, just north of the mouth of the Barron River, 2 kilometres short of the Cairns Airport on a flight to New Guinea. "VX9 Major General George Alan Vasey CB, CBE, DSO, MC (Greece), DSC (USA) Commander of the 6th and 7th Divisions of the Second AIF (Australian Imperial Force), VX57673 Maj Gen Rupert Major Downes CMG VD, and NX324 Lieutenant Colonel G A Bertram - three victims of an air crash near Cairns, QLD, on 5 March 1945, were given a military funeral at Cairns on 8th March 1945. Troops of the 7th Australian Division congregated in the 7th Australian Division boxing arena to take part in a Memorial service. The two RAAF victims of the crash, 404543 Flight Lieutenant John William (Jack) Newell and 409400 Warrant Officer Berrol Samuel Frieze, were given an Air Force funeral. Attending the funeral: VX1 Commander in Chief General Sir Thomas Blamey CBE KCB CMG DSO ED; NX8 Lieutenant General Sir Leslie J Morshead KCB KBE CMG DSO ED; Maj Gen E J Milford DSO; SX21810 Private Francis Thomas Wilsdon."
