His name is on the Historic Obelisk in Melbourne General Cemetery, however he was not Jewish. John attested that he was Church of England. Son of Rev John Henry Shallberg & Anna Archer née BELL, The Manse, Streatham. Jewish Reverends do not live in manses. John’s parents marriage notice: SHALLBERG-BELL On the 2nd inst at the residence of the bride’s uncle, WH Atkins Esq, Northcote by the Rev J Gregson, Rev J H Shallberg of Hobart to Anna Archer eldest daughter of C W Bell of Sandhurst. Source: The Argus Tuesday 14 June 1881. John’s mother was born 14 February 1860 Reg No 5410 NSW and died 3 September 1933 Reg No 7106 age 73. She is interred at Box Hill Cemetery, Baptist Section, Grave 66 with her baby sister, Edith Bell. Maternal grandparents: Charles William BELL 1826-1895 & Jane Irwin Henrietta née BLEST 1828-4 October 1892 Reg No 10826/1892 Paramatta, NSW. Rabbis decision: Ruled to not be Jewish. Therefore not to be on the list for future memorials.
