Notes
His name is on the Historic Obelisk in Melbourne General Cemetery, however there was no casualty found. Many others within and outside our association have tried to find him with no success. There is no grave in this name registered with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Found was: 745 Trooper Herbert Edward SAMUELS, born in Hay, NSW. He enlisted 8 December 1914, in Holdsworthy, NSW. He attested that he was Church of England and no link to Victoria was found. He was not Jewish and was killed in action. There is a cross on his grave. Rabbi’s and researcher’s decision: Ruled that he did not exist and no casualty was found. Therefore not to be on the list for future memorials.
