His name is on the Historic Obelisk in Melbourne General Cemetery, however he was not Jewish. Hartley attested that he was Church of England. Son of Charles EDELSTEN (born 1862 Reg No 5265 St Arnaud and died 15 September 1929 Reg No 12202 South Arnaud, Victoria age 68) & Susan née McROSTIE (born 1860 Reg No 15968 Muckleford, Victoria and died 7 August 1943 Reg No 20761 St Arnaud, Victoria age 83). Hartley’s parents married on 13 December 1886 Reg No 5746 at St Peters Church of England, Canapooee, Arnaud. Maternal Grandparents James McROSTIE (1835 Perth, Scotland - 17 September1916 St Arnaud) & Lucy née CROWHURST (1840 Adelaide, SA - 27 June 1928 St Arnaud). Married 24 May 1858 Reg No 2027 at Castlemaine, Victoria by Rev James Lowy and the rites of the Presbyterian Church. Susan, Charles and family and the McRostie family are buried in the Church of England section of St Arnaud Cemetery. Rabbi’s decision: Ruled to not be Jewish and therefore not to be on the list for future memorials.
