His name is on the Historic Obelisk in Melbourne General Cemetery, however he was not Jewish. He attested that he was Protestant. Son of Lewis CANTOR (born 1856 Geelong, died 16th September 1937 Reg No 8440 at “Myraville”, Alicia Street, Hampton) & Annie COATE (born 1866 Ascot, died 7th September 1956 Reg No 11027 at Caulfield age 90. Cremated, Springvale Crematorium). Parents married 25th January 1890 Reg No 1750 Moor Street, Fitzroy at Office of the Registrar of Marriages. Maternal Grandparents: George Coggan COATE (1835 - 1922) & Mary née HANNAN born in Limerick, Ireland (1842 - 1907). Maternal Grandparents married 20 April 1864 Reg No 1154 Christ Church, Ballarat by officiating minister Henry Adeney, according to the rites of the Church of England. Maternal Great grandmother was Louisa ORMOND. Commonwealth War Graves Commission document states that there is to be a “cross” on the grave and there is. Rabbi’s decision: Ruled to not be Jewish. Therefore not to be on the list for future memorials.
